INSIDE OUTSIDE/ PETRA BLAISSE - DREAM DESIGN STUDIO?

MY THOUGHTS:

After researching around some of Piet Oudolf's projects I came across his collaboration with the design studio known as 'Inside Outside' and their project 'Biblioteca degli Alberi'; which has been referred to as 'Milan's Library of Trees' as it features these perfect circular forests that create meeting saces for students and city residents.

Another question I asked myself whilst researching the design was whether I could see myself working there alongside architects and interior designers? Could I fit into such a multi-disciplinary team? From looking at some of their other landscape designs I certainly found them inspiring but I did not like how the formal design took away from Piet Oudolf's naturalistic planting style and I feel the two concepts compete for attention and what really is the highlight of this particular project is showcasing the trees in a quite a scientific manner in such perfect circles. Therefore, although the collaboration is high profile and high calibre, I do not feel as though Oudolf's planting style in this example actually harmonises well, with the overall design.

"Designed by Dutch studio Inside Out/Petra Blaisse, the Biblioteca degli Alberi was conceived in 2003 as a new genre of public park. Not only does it contain a rich library of plant life (hence the name) with over 135,000 plants that include 100 different species and 500 trees, its layout is entirely unique. It features a geometric design of interlacing paths (strewn with botanically themed phrases), irregularly shaped fields and clusters of circular forests that form green ‘rooms’, areas for play, contemplation and events." - https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/milan-green-lung-biblioteca-degli-alberi

Inside Outside creates
dynamic environments,
both inside and out.

Inside Outside specializes in landscape design and in interior architecture.

The studio’s main interest lies in the creations of dynamic, site specific environments, both inside and outside with, preferably, a link between the two. To us inter-disciplinary collaboration and clear communication is key. We want to contribute to a larger whole, learning from each new experience and collaboration to thus develop our métiers into new directions. Our contribution to a project is meant to enforce and (constructively!) challenge the architecture and design directions within the given program and context, together with the team that we connect to, each time we start a new project.

Often commissioned for public buildings and urban master plans, we work in close collaboration with architects, planners, engineers, craftsmen and scientists from concept design through tender, construction and installation. We develop objects and interventions that offer solutions to technical demands such as acoustics, light, sun, visibility and climate; adding logical, spatial, visual and sensual effects, both to the landscape and to interior spaces.

The park acts as urban connector, cultural campus and botanical garden. Paths are drawn from different areas (residential, commercial, governmental) around the site, creating a grid of connections that overlap and cross with one another. These paths, together with the irregular fields that are created in-between, can overcome height differences and underlying traffic tunnels, create sound-walls and bridge streets. The planting design for the fields is composed of a series of carefully selected species. Each plot offers a different type of growth and program. Circular forests are scattered over the site and will grow into roofs of foliage of different colour and structure that float above the park. A series of cultural, educational, social and commercial buildings are placed in the park and along its edges, their program triggering interest and income for the area and thus securing a high-level maintenance program for the park.

Love this circular swing set!
