North Place Site Analysis

Image
North Place Site Analysis Drawing the base map: I wanted a detailed base map that I could overlay the site analysis drawings. I made sure to include all of the built form to provide extensive context. The site boundary is outlined by a dashed red line and the roads are indicated in blue. I then used photoshop to block in the houses to create a Nolli map.  Site Visit Response: 18/2/22 Upon the site visit I focused on views in and out of the site, what needs to be buffered and blocked and what needs to be highlighted. From this more general site analysis I could delve into more detail the other aspects of the site including circulation and sunlight. CIRCULATION I wanted to mark all the routes used through the site including important nodes and intersections (see green), the blue marks the direction of car traffic with the light blue representing the bus lane. As you can see, there is a clear desire line diagonally through site which is currently been blocked/slowed via the unev...

Colour Swatch: Oil Pastel

Colour Swatch: Oil Pastel Here is the result of scanning the colour swatch of oil pastels! I really like the strong opacity and rich depth of colour they provide plus there is ample opportunity for mixing these colours to create more realistic shades and tones.

What is Biophilia?

Image
What is Biophilia and how does it relate to design? As early as 1964 the term 'biophilia' was coined by psychoanalyst Erich Fromm who defined it as 'the connections that human beings subconsciously seek with the rest of life'. The 'biophilia' hypothesis was further researched and popularised by biologist Edward O. Wilson in his book of the same title in 1984. He argues that humans are innately connected to nature; "the urge to associate with other forms of life." In relation to design and landscape architecture, biophilia often involves incorporating nature at all levels, creating an immersive experience for the senses that highlight nature's beauty. Design that intentionally connects the user to directly experience nature within a built environment. Studies have proven that the closer our relationship with nature, the better one's mental and physical well-being. Achieving a symbiosis with nature via design requires certain principles:  1. Visu...

Spatial Thinking

Image
Spatial Thinking Definition: Spatial thinking is the ability to visualize the location and dimension of objects and manipulate their shape freely.  Translating ideas from the imagination onto paper is most successfully done with quick sketches. I often start by drawing a box to define the exterior framework in which to draw the object within. This helps me to keep a certain scale. If applicable to the subject, a simple drawing of a person can transform the drawing as it effectively creates a relatable scale. Keeping my hand loose also helps to free my wrist to draw with more movement and it's certainly true that I am often picturing in my head the object's form. Generating new objects through drawing, often polymorphic fluid, ovular creations can be done without conscious thought as one automatically fills in the voids and hollows out indents to fabricate an abstract form. I've also been inspired most by industrial designers such as car designers as I vividly remember watch...
